El gran dictador (en inglés The Great Dictator) es una película estadounidense de 1940 escrita, dirigida y protagonizada por el británico Charles Chaplin. Chaplin era el único cineasta en Hollywood que seguía realizando películas mudas cuando el sonido ya estaba plenamente implantado en el cine, y esta fue su primera película sonora y la de mayor éxito.
En el momento de su estreno, Estados Unidos todavía estaba en paz con la Alemania nazi, pero la película ya era una feroz y controvertida condena contra el nazismo, el fascismo, el antisemitismo y las dictaduras en general. En la película, Chaplin define a los nazis como "hombres-máquinas, con cerebros y corazones de máquinas".

Todos queremos vivir por la felicidad de otro, no por la miseria de otros. No queremos odiar y despreciar a otro. En este mundo hay espacio para todos y la tierra es rica y puede proveer para todos.
Nuestra forma de vida puede ser libre y hermosa.
Pero hemos perdido el camino.
La avaricia ha envenenado el alma de los hombres, ha llenado el mundo con odio: nos ha empujado a la miseria y la masacre.
Hemos desarrollado velocidad pero no hemos aislado: la maquinaria que nos da abundancia nos ha dejado en necesidad.Nuestro conocimiento nos ha hecho cínicos, nuestra astucia nos ha endurecido y amargado. Pensamos mucho y sentimos muy poco. Mas que maquinaria necesitamos humanidad. Mas que astucia necesitamos amabilidad y gentileza. Sin estas cualidades la vida sera violenta y todo estará perdido.
El aeroplano y la radio nos han acercado. La misma naturaleza de estas invenciones demuestre el bien en el hombre, llaman a la fraternidad universal y la unidad de todos nosotros. Incluso ahora mi voz esta alcanzando a millones alrededor del mundo, millones de hombres en desesperación, niños y mujeres, victimas de un sistema que hace al hombre torturar y encarcelar a gente inocente. A esos que pueden oírme les digo "No desesperes".
Esta miseria que esta sobre nosotros no es mas que el paso de la avaricia, la amargura de hombres que temen el camino del progreso humano: el odio del hombre pasara y los dictadores morirán y el poder que tomaron del hombre regresaran al hombre, la libertad nunca perecerá.
Soldados, no se rindan antes brutos, hombres que te desprecian y esclavizan, que controlan tu vida, te dicen que hacer, que pensar y que sentir, que te explotan, te imponen dietas, te tratan como ganado, como carne de cañón.
No se rindan antes estos hombres desnaturalizados, hombres maquina, con mente de maquina y corazón de maquina.Tu no eres una maquina, tu no eres ganado, ustedes son hombres, tienen el amor de la humanidad en su corazón. Ustedes no odian, solo los no amados odian. Solo los no amados y desnaturalizados...
Soldados, no luchen por la esclavitud, luchen por la libertad.
En capitulo 17 de San Lucas esta escrito "El reino de Dios esta en el hombre", no Un hombre o un Grupo de hombres, sino en todos los hombres, en ustedes, la gente.
Ustedes, la gente, tienen el poder de crear maquinas, de crear felicidad.
Ustedes, las personas, tienen el poder de hacer la vida libre y hermosa, de hacer esta vida una aventura maravillosa. Entonces, en el nombre de la democracia usemos ese poder, unámonos.
Luchemos por un nuevo mundo, un mundo decente que dará al hombre oportunidad de trabajar, que te dara el futuro, edad y seguridad. Por la promesa de estas cosas, brutos han llegado al poder, pero mienten, no cumplen esa promesa, nunca lo harán. Luchemos por un mundo de razón, un mundo donde la ciencia y el progreso lleven al hombrea la felicidad.
Soldados, en el nombre de la democracia, Unámonos!
Miren hacia arriba! las nubes se están yendo, el sol esta saliendo. Estamos saliendo de la oscuridad y yendo hacia la luz. Nos dirigimos a un mundo nuevo. Un mundo nuevo donde el hombre se alzara sobre el odio y la brutalidad.
El alama del hombre ha sido dada almas y finalmente comienza a volar. Esta volando hacia el arcoiris, hacia la luz de la esperanza, hacia el futuro, ese glorioso futuro te pertenece a ti, a mi y a todos nosotros. Miren hacia arriba!"

The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed, the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress: the hate of men will pass and dictators die and the power they took from the people, will return to the people and so long as men die [now] liberty will never perish...
Soldiers - don't give yourselves to brutes, men who despise you and enslave you - who regiment your lives, tell you what to do, what to think and what to feel, who drill you, diet you, treat you as cattle, as cannon fodder.
Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men, machine men, with machine minds and machine hearts. You are not machines. You are not cattle. You are men. You have the love of humanity in your hearts. You don't hate - only the unloved hate. Only the unloved and the unnatural. Soldiers - don't fight for slavery, fight for liberty.
In the seventeenth chapter of Saint Luke it is written " the kingdom of God is within man " - not one man, nor a group of men - but in all men - in you, the people.
You the people have the power, the power to create machines, the power to create happiness. You the people have the power to make life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure. Then in the name of democracy let's use that power - let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world, a decent world that will give men a chance to work, that will give you the future and old age and security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power, but they lie. They do not fulfil their promise, they never will. Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people. Now let us fight to fulfil that promise. Let us fight to free the world, to do away with national barriers, do away with greed, with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men's happiness.
Soldiers - in the name of democracy, let us all unite!
Look up! Look up! The clouds are lifting - the sun is breaking through. We are coming out of the darkness into the light. We are coming into a new world. A kind new world where men will rise above their hate and brutality.
The soul of man has been given wings - and at last he is beginning to fly. He is flying into the rainbow - into the light of hope - into the future, that glorious future that belongs to you, to me and to all of us. Look up. Look up."
